Baldwin Street Remodel

Remodel · North Portland

Tweto Architecture was retained for a comprehensive remodel of a 1910 north Portland farmhouse. The project scope included the kitchen, rear-entrance and downstairs bathroom.

The existing kitchen was isolated from the rest of the house and had a poor layout. The design was dated and ready to be updated to harmonize with the house. A poorly constructed rear addition blocked connection to the backyard and had a leaky flat roof and dropped ceiling. A strange two-room downstairs bathroom was in need of an update and a more functional layout.

The rear addition was rebuilt both to extend the kitchen and restore the original form of the house, while also addressing the leaking roof, poor insulation, and structural deficiencies of the existing addition. The rebuilt addition contains a seating area that connects the kitchen to the back yard. A peninsula divides the seating area from the kitchen work area. The kitchen was further opened up to connect with the dining room and make room for an inviting island with seating. Free-standing and built-in flush inset cabinets and shelves mix together to form a refined timeless look.

The reconfigured downstairs bathroom opens to the seating area near the back door. A compact but efficient layout allows for a functional bathroom and a much-needed coat closet. The client found and imported custom, hand-made tile from Mexico which brings a unique and beautiful texture to the bathroom and kitchen backsplash.

We worked very closely with the client, Cailin Ettenger, to select, refine, and explore every detail of the interior design palette. The result is a stunning composition that feels eclectic, yet cohesive and fits with the 1900s farmhouse and the client's style.
