Construction experience informs the design from the beginning, helping make the home both refined and buildable.
A well-designed home should be comfortable, durable, efficient, and built to last. We use the principles of building science to shape decisions about orientation, insulation, air sealing, mechanical systems, and moisture management. These elements work together to make a home feel better, use less energy, and hold up over time.
Our experience with permitting and land use reviews means we start with designs that can be approved and built. We are familiar with new zoning rules for infill housing in Portland and throughout Oregon, including new options for adding a second home to some properties without the restrictions of Accessory Dwelling Units.

Remodels & Additions
If you love where you live and mostly love your home, a remodel or addition can be the right choice. Instead of taking on the expense and disruption of searching for a new house, you can invest in the home you already own. We listen carefully to understand what is working, what is not, and what needs to change. Then we design solutions that make your home work better, while respecting the character of the house and its neighbors.
Our experience with older Portland homes helps us identify opportunities and constraints early. We regularly work with common challenges such as opening a closed kitchen, rearranging a difficult bathroom, expanding or finishing an attic, adding bathrooms, improving connections to the outdoors, and creating needed space. We understand what makes older homes special, how they are put together, and how to make thoughtful changes that feel like a natural fit.
Remodeling is not just about space and appearance. We can also evaluate your home to identify and prioritize opportunities to improve comfort, durability, air quality, and energy performance. Better insulation, air sealing, mechanical systems, and moisture management all work together to make an older home more comfortable, efficient, and resilient.

Accessory Dwelling Units
An ADU can add flexible living space, long-term value, and new possibilities to a home you already own. We understand the regulations that shape ADU design from the beginning, and we know how to navigate the approvals needed to get them built.
ADUs can serve different purposes at different stages of life. A space built for an aging parent can become a rental. A home office can double as a guest house. This flexibility is part of what makes ADUs so useful. If you are planning both an ADU and a remodel, building the ADU first may also give you a temporary place to live while the main house is under construction.
ADUs have all the elements of a new home, but in a limited space. Careful design is essential to create a plan that works well and feels generous. Extra attention is needed to address privacy, context, light, and views on small urban sites and near neighboring homes. For an ADU to work well, construction details and systems also need to be carefully integrated into the design. Our experience with ADUs in Portland and the surrounding area helps us resolve these elements and design ADUs that are refined, efficient, and buildable.

In addition to new homes, remodels, and ADUs, we can help with performance upgrades, feasibility studies, pre-purchase consultations, space planning, and early planning or site studies. We also take on selected commercial and tenant improvement work when the project is design-focused and a good fit.
Most of our work is in Oregon and Washington, but for the right project we're open to working elsewhere.
