Kitchen Remodel · North Portland
Tweto Architecture designed a bright, open kitchen for this older Portland home. The solution kept within the existing house footprint to limit project cost while creating a functional kitchen with plenty of storage.
Contractor: AKOS Construction
An earlier 1970s-era kitchen remodel was tiny and poorly laid out with the refrigerator located in an adjacent closet. Walls with small openings separated the existing dining room from both the kitchen and the rest of the house. Older cabinetry was difficult to operate and inefficient.
By connecting the kitchen and dining room space and claiming underutilized closet space, the new kitchen design created ample space for both. The primary workspace along the north and west walls provides plenty of bright counter space and good workflow. A generous pantry module along the south wall includes the refrigerator, storage, and a separate coffee area. Open shelving and a chimney-style hood keep the space light and bright.
The original decorative archway between the dining room and entry was expanded and carefully reproduced, preserving the character of the original while opening up the space. White oak cabinets and white quartz countertops reinforce the bright space and help it feel larger than it is.
