Kelly Street Remodel
Whole-House Remodel · Southeast Portland
This 1950s ranch in SE Portland had the bones and the location, but the layout hadn't kept up with how the owners wanted to live. The kitchen was undersized and disconnected, a poorly built sunroom addition leaked and blocked light, and the generous daylight basement was completely unfinished.
The redesign updates the house for flexible, single-level living — open and connected for entertaining, yet organized for privacy with a separate primary suite. Modern systems and a rebuilt envelope improve comfort and efficiency. The result feels like a natural extension of the mid-century ranch character of the original home.

The project scope extends across two phases. The first, now completed, includes remodeling the main floor kitchen and dining area and bathroom, a mudroom extension into the garage, and a new stair addition off the living room. New siding, insulation, and windows update the exterior and improve building performance.
The existing roofline was extended over the garage, simplifying the roofline and opening space for a mudroom, half bath, and a subtle kitchen extension. This small addition allows for an efficient, open kitchen plan with an island and plentiful storage. The kitchen takes advantage of unexpected views over the large backyard.
The original stair to the generous daylight basement was a narrow utility stair in what is now the mudroom. A new, bright stair addition replaces a poorly constructed sunroom off the living room. The primary bathroom was remodeled with a curbless shower and floating vanity. A new pocket door allows the primary bedroom, bathroom, and office to be separated from the rest of the house.
