Mountaindale Home
New Home · North Plains, OR · In Design
The client grew up on this rural property near North Plains, OR, and they are excited to return to the property as they near retirement. The original home on the property burned down in 2023; fortunately, it was unoccupied at the time. Though the property is zoned Exclusive Farm Use, the existing dwelling allows a replacement home to be constructed.
The home is designed to fit the rural site and support flexible living with a strong connection to the landscape. As a forever home, it is designed for single-level living and aging in place, with additional bedrooms upstairs for visiting family and friends. This division allows the home to work well for two people most of the time while accommodating guests when needed.
An open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space offers just enough separation to feel like distinct rooms while allowing uses, views, and light to flow through. A woodstove, built-ins, and the stair to the second floor provide rich boundaries to the living space. The dining room opens to a generous covered porch. The kitchen takes advantage of east views over a meadow and includes ample storage, counter space, and a generously sized island separating it from the dining space.
The tiled entry is adjacent to a mudroom with laundry, storage, a dog-washing station, and a half-bath. The primary suite includes a generous bathroom with a soaking tub, shower, and separate toilet area. A walk-in closet completes the suite. An open stair connects to the second floor with three bedrooms and a guest bathroom.
The home is designed to last and perform, with exterior mineral wool insulation, a metal roof, solar panels, and a carefully detailed building envelope.
